It can be hard to pick a preschool, especially when there are so many options. Don’t get me wrong, the building is something you should pay attention to, but not the only thing you should be looking at. Here are a few elements to consider as you search for a good preschool program:
Classroom atmosphere and design – The atmosphere should feel inviting and ideally have many colors incorporated into the layout of the building. You want to look for space, not a cluttered environment, and signs that movement is encouraged in the classroom. Another important thing to look at is the cleanliness of the facility because kids are germy enough, so the last thing you want is for the rooms to be dirty.
Teachers – It’s important to pay attention to the body language of the preschool teachers you meet and observe how they interact with their students. The last thing you want is for your child to be enrolled in a preschool program and not be respected by their teachers.
Emphasis on social-emotional development – Social-emotional development should be the focus of any preschool program you are considering because preschool is when a child starts to become self-aware. Not only will preschool-aged children begin to understand their emotions, but also the emotions of others. It’s important to find a preschool program that takes the time to help your child develop healthy, positive relationships with their classmates.
Safety – Make sure you ask about the protocols in place for fires and other unexpected dangerous situations, but also look around the classrooms your child may be in. Check to make sure all the toys and furniture are age appropriate and won’t be dangerous for your child.
